Privacy & AI Use — Learn Japanese
Last updated: 29 October 2026
The Learn Japanese section of astarlearner.com is made by A Star Learner, based in Melbourne, Australia. Its exercises, conversation practice and feedback are generated by an AI service. This page explains what that means for your data.
The short version
- There are no accounts, sign-up or login.
- What you type — and the text of what you say — is sent to OpenAI to generate exercises, replies and feedback.
- We don’t keep your content: we have no database and don’t save your answers or chats on our servers.
- Your progress and your latest conversation are saved only in your own browser.
- Please don’t type personal details (names, contact info, passwords) into the practice boxes.
What is sent to the AI
When you use a practice feature, the request goes through our server to OpenAI, which writes the response. Depending on the feature, that includes:
- The type and difficulty of exercise you ask for.
- Your answers to exercises, and the exercise they relate to.
- Your chat messages and the earlier messages in that conversation.
- Writing you submit for feedback (translations, compositions).
- The text transcript of a phrase you speak, for pronunciation feedback.
OpenAI processes this under its own terms and privacy policy (see OpenAI’s privacy policy). We don’t send your name, email or any account details, because none exist. AI output can be wrong or odd — treat it as practice, not as authoritative teaching.
Speaking and the microphone
The speaking and pronunciation features use your browser’s built-in speech recognition after you grant microphone permission. We never receive your audio. Depending on your browser, the browser vendor may process the audio to turn it into text (for example, Chrome uses Google’s speech service) — check your browser’s own privacy settings. Only the resulting text is sent on to our AI service.
What stays in your browser
To remember where you left off, your browser’s local storage keeps which learning steps you’ve completed and your most recent conversation (up to the last 40 messages). This never leaves your device except as part of an AI request while you’re chatting. To erase it, press “Reset Conversation” in the chat, or clear this site’s data in your browser settings.
Hosting, analytics and abuse limits
The site is hosted on Vercel, which keeps standard server logs, and we use Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate page-view statistics. To prevent abuse and runaway costs, the AI features are rate-limited per visitor: your IP address is held briefly in server memory to count requests per minute. We don’t store it or link it to anything you write.
Children
This section is a general-audience learning tool and is not designed to collect personal information from anyone, including children. Younger learners should use it with a parent or guardian.
Changes to this page
If how the Learn Japanese pages handle data changes, we’ll update this page and its “last updated” date.
